In 1959 is created the national Prize of Drawing and Printmaking (Premio Nacional de Dibujo y Grabado)   this honor was received by Ivan Petrovsky, and it was awarded. It was awarded until 1969.

In 1963 the new mention architecture was incorporated to the prize and it was received by the master Carlos Raúl Villanueva.

In 1970 for the first time was honored the national prize of theater, it was received by Rodolfo Santana and finally in 1975 is incorporated the mention music, award

That was given for the first time to the pianist Moises moleiro. In 1986 Juan Félix Sanchez won the mention popular culture. In 1992 was created the last mention danza and was awarded to the renowned dancer Vicente Nebreda.

Even though the history of the National cultural award began in 1940 over the years its characteristic and mentions have changed a very great deal, but in 1997 this prize giving is regularized establishing a ten mentions prize.

This prize is the most important award in culture granted by the Venezuelan State and it has been organized by many government bodies over the years. Firstly The Ministry of Education was responsible, then became a responsibility of the Instituto Nacional de Cultura and Bellas Artes (INCIBA) and subsequently of the Consejo Nacional de la Cultura (CONAC), In 2006 the Ministry of Popular Power for Culture changed to a one of its bodies which is the Casa del Artista Foundation, institution that took responsibility for the organization, coordination and the award ceremony.  In the same year new bases were established and the prize became a new biennial in which the awarded categories were Plastic arts, Cinema, Popular culture, dance, photography humanities, literature, music and theater.

With the perspectives and valuation of the Bolivarian Government the prize winners have been recognized and dignified in a great event showing close familiarity and admiration, with a significant cash prize, social assistance and a fair allocation for life. This award is the only prize that concedes economic resources and contributes to a better quality of life of the winners.

It is recognition of our creator people.
